Abstract

Although the Maslach Burnout Inventory–Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) has been used to study the construct in Mexican populations, the versions employed in such research have not been specifically adapted for this population. Based on this, the objective of this study was to adapt and determine the factor structure of the MBI-HSS in Mexican public servants. To this end, an instrumental study was conducted that details the process of scale adaptation and cross-validation using a convenience sample of 1,551 public servants. The total sample was divided into two parts: one to conduct an exploratory factor analysis, and the other to perform a confirmatory factor analysis (to verify whether the structure found in the first sample was reproduced in the second). The procedure showed that the MBI-HSS differs from the original version, as although it retains a three-factor structure, it does so with only 17 items. Nevertheless, the CFA indicated that the results of the first sample were reproduced in the second with good fit (CFI = .952, TLI = .949, RMSEA = .053, IC 90 % [.049-.057], SRMR = .067). Furthermore, the reliability indices were adequate for the three subscales—depersonalization (ω = .792), emotional exhaustion (ω = .890), and personal accomplishment (ω = .776)—and the invariance analyses showed item equivalence regarding sex, age, and university education.
